For Wilshire Baptist Church

As this is being posted, we’re in San Antonio for the wedding vow renewal of my brother and his wife on their 25th anniversary. We are there because we are family, of course, but also because in a momentary lapse of judgement, they asked me to “officiate.” When I expressed my doubts, my brother reasoned that they were already married so there was no way I could mess that up and say something that would unmarry them. So it shall be.

Lasting Presence

For Wilshire Baptist Church

It’s bowl season for football fans, and I’ll admit that while I’m a football fan, I’m not a big fan of bowl games. That may seem like a disconnect, but unless the bowl is leading toward a national championship, I just don’t find much to get excited about. Bowls are good for school coffers and media exposure, but for me the interest is fleeting.

To Be the Church

For Wilshire Baptist Church

Spending the week transforming Wilshire’s community hall into Bethlehem for One Starry Night, I’ve been reminded again what it means to “be the church.”

When I was younger I heard often that a church is not the building but rather the people. And now I’m reminded that it’s not just the people sitting shoulder to shoulder in the pews for worship or sitting in Sunday School rooms discussing the interplay of the gospel and current events.
