School on the Porch

For Wilshire Baptist Church

It was a life lesson taught and learned on our front porch: responsibility and all that.

A neighborhood girl came by one afternoon seeking donations for her middle school band. She explained that the money collected would be used to purchase and maintain their band instruments, and donors would be entered in a drawing. She had a collection sign-up log so I knew it was legitimate and was glad to contribute a small amount. As we talked, I learned that she plays the clarinet. I told her that LeAnn and I still play our band instruments in the church wind ensemble. She looked at me with quizzical surprise and then thanked me and went on her way. End of story, or so I thought.

Give Thanks

For Wilshire Baptist Church

Is a gift really a gift if the recipient doesn’t know they’ve been given the gift?

That’s the question on my mind this Thanksgiving week. The holiday is intended to be an occasion to give thanks for the good things we have received in life. Most certainly it is a time to give thanks to God for those things that come most definitely from God. But we also give thanks for the people in our lives who have blessed us in certain ways.

Waiting on the Spirit

For Wilshire Baptist Church

So, it’s no big secret now that our pastor search committee at Wilshire Baptist Church has chosen the person they believe is the best possible candidate to lead our congregation into the future. But the reveal has yet to happen and so we must wait a little longer.

No doubt the feelings of wondering and wishing that many of us have experienced over these past months have intensified. Some will be listening and watching for hints in the words and the body language of committee members in these days before the name is officially announced.
