I didn’t notice the irony at first, but last week we attended the graduation ceremony of class #82 of the Collin College Fire Academy. Wilshire’s Ethan Walters was among the 21 graduates, and we were there to support him but also Kristi, his incredible, tenacious mother.

Saved for Change

I’m a big fan of misheard lyrics. I especially like the ones that are goofy and nonsensical. Probably the most famous is Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “there’s a bad moon on the rise” lyric that has been humorously misquoted as “there’s a bathroom on the right.” 

Sometimes the wrong words sound right but they change the meaning significantly. For years I heard an old Charlie Rich song, “Rolling with the Flow,” that said, “I’ve got my angel raising kids” until I read the actual lyrics, “While guys my age are raising kids.” Instead of being a married man who can’t settle down, the narrator is a single man who hasn’t grown up. Big difference for sure.

Turnoff to Honey Island

For Wilshire Baptist Church

I’ve told the story several times over the years in this space about how my family was traveling to my grandparents’ house for our annual Easter celebration when a pickup truck crossed the highway in front of us and caused a collision that ended my sister Martha’s life. That was 51 years ago, and while I really don’t dwell on it, the fact that it happened the week of Easter brings it to my mind most years. But, I may finally have found an end to the story, at least for me.
